Abstract:
      Objective To investigate the causes of death of retired military veterans in who died in Changhai Hospital. Methods Causes of death were analyzed and sequenced based on the medical records of 172 inpatients who died in Changhai Hospital from March 1985 to January 2013. Results The five leading causes of death were Tumor (41.9%), nervous system (16.9%), circulatory system (15.7%), respiratory system (10.5%), and endocrine and metabolic diseases (7.6%). The five leading disease entities of death were tumor (42.4%), coronary heart disease (12.8%), chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (8.7%), cerebral infarction (8.1%) and diabetes (7.6%). The eight leading causes of death in tumor due to tumors were lung cancer (35.6%), pancreatic cancer (9.6%), colorectal cancer and gastric cancer (both 8.2%), prostate cancer and liver cancer (both 5.5%), lymphoma and multiple myeloma (both 4.1%). Conclusion Tumor is the leading cause of death in hospitalized retired military veterans. And cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are also the primary causes of death in these elderly patients. So we should continue to strengthen the prevention and treatment of tumor and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
